Scripture Reading
John 14:12
“Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.”
Introductory Remarks:
Many of us grew up being told: “Just obey. Don’t question.” Obedience was presented as the highest virtue — but we must ask: obedience to who? To what? The truth is, obedience without principle becomes bondage. It can even block us from the abundance God intends.
Historically, obedience — or the lack of it — was born more from a desire to control than to liberate. The early church leaders compiled what we now call the Bible largely as a way to keep people in line. Over centuries, many versions of the Bible have emerged, and while we often call it “the inerrant word of God,” it is not.
To be clear: we use the Bible. It is our primary text, and when rightly understood it is a powerful tool. But it is not a book of fear or bondage. Properly interpreted, the Bible teaches freedom, liberation, justice, love, equity, wisdom, prosperity, healing, and life. These are the very principles that Jesus embodied and revealed.
And today, we will see how the Bible — when used as a tool of principle, not control — releases the abundance of God into our lives.
Definitions:
Oxford English Dictionary
- Obedience: “Compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority.”
- Abundance: “A very large quantity of something; plentifulness; prosperity.”
Major Points of the Lesson:
- Point 1: Obedience as a Crutch vs. Obedience to Principle — Blind obedience used as a crutch leads to bondage and control, but obedience to Divine Principle brings freedom, wisdom, and abundance. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2 Cor. 3:17)
- Point 2: The Bible as Tool or Trap — When read as rigid rules the Bible becomes a trap of fear and limitation, but when read through Principle, it becomes a tool of liberation, justice, and prosperity. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
- Point 3: Obedience to Principle Releases Abundance — Covenant, wisdom, stewardship, and alignment with Spirit open the way for true abundance in every area of life.
Abraham – The Covenant brought blessing in all things. (Gen. 24:1). Solomon – Asked for wisdom; wealth followed. (1 Kings 3:11–13). Joseph – Stewardship and vision saved nations. (Gen. 41:38–44). Jesus – Modeled radical alignment with Spirit over tradition.
Quote:
“If it reflects Love, Truth, and Life, and it builds freedom and harmony for all, it is Principle. If it reflects fear, ego, or division, it’s personal or cultural.” CB Wilson
The Principle Test:
- Is it Universal?
- Is it Unchanging?
- Does it Liberate?
- Does it reflect Divine Love and Oneness
- Does it Withstand the Test of Time?
