The Power to Build and The Power To Demolish
“Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.’ Then I said, ‘Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.’ Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, ‘Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
Jeremiah 1: 4-6, 9-10 (NRSV)
INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON
When Jesus summoned his twelve disciples he gave them the power “over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.” (Matthew 10:1) The disciples Phillip (power) and Thaddeus (renunciation) were among those called.
Each of our twelve spiritual powers or accelerated abilities is a spiritual tool with which to build consciousness.
- Power is a spiritual tool in consciousness development. It is our ability to master, dominate and control our thoughts, feelings and beliefs. It also gives us the ability to master Divine Ideas, Principles and Laws that makes it possible to express our Christ nature.
- Renunciation has two functions in consciousness development. We use it to avoid negativity and to eliminate negativity. It is our ability to release, remove, denounce, deny, say no, forgive and let go. Renunciation takes things out of existence.
