Love that Cooperates, Wisdom that Knows

Passage: Matthew 4:18, 21-22

SCRIPTURE READING

“As he walked by the Sea of Galilee…he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.”
Matthew 4:18, 21-22 (NRSV)

INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON

John who represents ‘Love’ and Andrew who represents ‘Wisdom’ are brothers. They are both called by Jesus into ministry (service) at the same time. They are most effective when they work ‘together’ for they are kin. When wisdom and love work in harmony with each other the result is right ideas that manifest God’s intention.

MAJOR POINTS OF THE LESSON

  1. James son of Zebedee, represents wisdom — our ability to intuitively know. It is spiritual intuition or the voice of God within us. It is the source of our understanding. It includes judgment, discrimination and all the ways we obtain knowledge.
  2. John represents love — the power that joins and binds in divine harmony, the universe and everything in it. It is the harmonizing and healing principle. It sees good everywhere and in everybody.

QUOTES

“Every genuine expression of love grows out of a consistent and total surrender to God.”
Martin Luther King Jr.

“Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
