Keeping Our Prayers On Track & Not Side Tracked

‘Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss.’

James 4:3 (KJV)

Dear Prosperity Partners,

As we continue to celebrate 46 years of the Universal Foundation for Better Living and its Founder, The Rev. Dr. Johnnie Colemon, we remind ourselves of the spiritual principles that undergird the teachings of this ministry.

In her book, It Works If You Work It, Johnnie (as she asked us to call her) gives a total of 10 reasons why our prayers seem to go unanswered. In Sunday’s Lesson Sermon, we addressed 9 of those reasons as recorded on pages 126-134 of the text. The one reason for unanswered prayer that I did not discuss on Sunday was that we fail to get to the underlying cause of our distress. Johnnie writes: ‘Our prayers are not answered because we pray for the effect to be healed.’ She uses the example of wanting to be free of a condition and the desire for the dis-ease to go away, with no mention or attention given to what caused the dis-ease in the first place.’

She then suggests that hatred is an underlying cause of sickness. Johnnie writes:

‘You have to get deep inside yourself and stop hating anybody, because they are not worth your having cancer…Once you start loving, you will find that love is a healing…Having pain, sickness, disease or discomfort in your body simply is not worth it.’

It Works If You Work It – Pg. 132

Along with praying selfishly; praying without faith; praying with problems at the center of our attention; praying while claiming the condition about which we pray; praying without following the natural laws of health; praying without an understanding of our heart’s true desires; praying and expecting an answer that we are not yet ready to receive; praying vain repetitions and praying with a focus on how good we are, rather than how Good God IS, we side track our prayers.

The good news is that we can always get back on track. Since God knows what we require before we ask, we can pray prayers of gratitude and thanksgiving for having already received BEFORE we knew to ask. I believe this is great news. So let’s pray prayers of gratitude often and keep every prayer ‘On Track.’

Praying with you,

Rev. Sheila
